Week 10 News: Tools to Craft Your Success!

April 12, 2010
Dear Friends,
Have you noticed how keeping track of your Shape Up RI progress is a motivator? It helps make you aware of just how active you have been. As we near the finish line, I encourage you and your team to keep reporting your progress and to do one more thing: take advantage of other online health tools.
These tools can help you monitor health-related measurements such as BMI, blood pressure and weight. Some track your rate of losses and gains for each measurement and evaluate the time you take to achieve a goal. Below are links to online health tools provided by the government and nonprofit sources. Check them out to see what fits you best!
Yours In Health,
Rajiv Kumar

Tools to Craft Your Success!
MyPyramid Tracker
This is one of our favorite tools, especially because of the Food Calories/Energy Balance feature that automatically calculates your energy balance by subtracting the energy you expend exercising from your calorie intake. It really makes clear the link between nutrition and regular physical activity. http://www.mypyramidtracker.gov/
Smarter Eating Tools
This collection of website tools focuses on nutrition, cluing you in to everything from calories at fast-food restaurants and calculating your BMI to meal planners and fat screeners! There are lots of interactive suggestions for kids, too.

Recipe: Salmon in White Wine Sauce
Salmon is a tasty way to eat smart because it’s an excellent source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, says the American Heart Association. It’s easy to cook and it’s so versatile that the Martha Stewart web site has put together 50 different ways to cook it. Here’s a super easy recipe for salmon in white wine sauce. http://www.marthastewart.com/photogallery/salmon-recipes?lpgStart=1¤tslide=6¤tChapter=1&xsc=eml_edf_2010_03_30#ms-global-breadcrumbs
Walk of the Week: Jamestown
Jamestown is a great choice for both walkers and bikers. Pick up lunch at the deli in town and head to the southern end of the island for a hike around Beavertail State Park, surrounded by crashing waves, it is one of the most beautiful spots in all of Rhode Island, complete with a lighthouse to tour. This is also a great spot for an after-work sunset walk. The island is 9 miles long and one mile wide, and has scenic views wherever you go. The town is in the middle, and has interesting shops to explore and several fine restaurants (try Tricia’s Tropigrille for a taste of the Caribbean). For a preview, URI has put together a virtual field trip. Read more at
